Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 would support a new Qualcomm ultrasonic fingerprint sensor Qualcomm on Tuesday unveiled the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform, the first new generation of mobile phone processor chips that will power 5G smartphones in the United States as soon as next year. The key feature of the Snapdragon 855 chip, launched at an event in Hawaii, is the 5G Snapdragon X50 modem for phones to connect to 5G wireless data networks with "multi-gigabit" mobile data speeds of up to 50 to 100 times faster than current 4G networks. Qualcomm, the largest supplier of mobile phone chips, said Snapdragon 855 would power Samsung 5G smartphones that Verizon Communications and Samsung said on Monday would be released in the United States in the first half of 2019. As per current info, the next Qualcomm mobile flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8150 will be unveiled on December 4. It has already flexed its muscles quite a bit in early benchmarks, including AnTuTu, Geekbench and ai-benchmark with its trendy workloads. Besides performance improvements, it also promises a 20% bump in overall efficiency ( presumably compared to the Snapdragon 845) and will most-likely include 5G connectivity.  The Qualcomm Invitation That pretty much sums up everything most users will need to know about the chip. Reports about the fingerprint sensor emerged from South Korea, revealing who will dominate the market next year. Qualcomm and MediaTek-owned Goodix are the two key players who will work with the biggest smartphone manufacturers in 2019.  According  to industry insiders, Qualcomm has already won orders for ultrasonic FP sensors from Samsung for the midrange and high-end Galaxy models, with shipments scheduled for late 2018 and early 2019. This is hardly a surprise anymore,  given the Korean manufacturer is is ditching the iris scanner.  Fingerprint scanners under the display are the hottest trend right now with a growing number of smartphones implementing the technology.
